Wisconsin counts on personal attorneys for 40 percent of its public defense work and offers the most affordable settlement of any state. Now the state is having a hard time to obtain attorneys to take those cases,NPR reports On Wednesday, the state Supreme Court will use up a petition that would provide lawyers a raise. Wisconsin Public Radio’s Danielle Kaeding has more. The Wisconsin Public Protector’s Workplace pays personal attorneys simply $40 an hour to represent their customers. It’s the most affordable rate in the country, and it hasn’t altered considering that 1995, when legislators decreased it from $50 an hour.
